Blick Art Materials

Blick Art Materials is consistently ranked as one of the largest retailers of arts supplies in the United States. It’s a family-owned retail and catalog business that’s been around since 1911 and caters to students, professional and amateur artists and even bulk orders for scholastic art programs (great for teachers and instructors!).

Make sure you check out their Hot Deals of the Week and CLEARANCE sections for deeply discounted offers, regular promotions and amazing savings on certain art products. We've seen items ranging from 15% to 83% off —That’s AMAZING!

Don’t forget, Blick has a phenomenal 100% satisfaction/365 days return policy that has not changed since 1911! The policy states, “If you are not completely satisfied with the quality of the merchandise you receive, you are entitled to a full replacement or refund.”

Physical Blick stores are currently located in many states, it’s possible that if you live in a larger city that there’s one near you so you can even save on shipping costs —here’s the current list of locations from their website. Alternatively, you could also use their convenient store finder tool and search for your nearest one.

Blick offers a Preferred Customer Program that features “Web Match Rebate” to extend online savings to your in-store purchases, a competitive “ Lowest Price Guarantee” and even a 10% Academic discount to students & professional educators.

As mentioned earlier, Blick Art Materials services many scholastic art programs ranging from kindergartens all the way up to college universities (including my own Alma mater). Educators can find an entire section in the drop down menu to the left of the website.

It’s filled with options to create course supply lists for your students to log in and order through (Blick U), special school discounts, lesson plans, a teachers news portal and even an educator forum.

There are a lot more hidden gems tucked away in Blick’s “Learning Resources” section, personally I love the “Inspiring Art Projects” tab to pick up a couple interesting ideas every now and then.

There’s even a collection of helpful product assembly and instructional videos, with further videos via their YouTube channel.

Artist & Craftsman Supply

Homepage_Artists & Craftsman 02.JPG

Artist & Craftsman Supply is the only 100% Employee Owned company on this list. It’s been around since 1985 and has expanded from it’s original store in northern New England to over 30 physical locations nationwide, mainly along both coasts. Personally I enjoyed learning more about this company’s history, and you can find out more about them here.

Overall this company offers solid value and regularly features great deals both online and in store. Although the free shipping require is a bit hire than some of the other online art supply stores on this list ($69 at the time of writing this article), you can easily hit that minimum if you’re restocking on a couple supplies all at once.

Key Features

  • Refund Policy: standard 30 day policy.

  • Payment Methods: PayPal, VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, Amazon Pay

  • Shipping:

    • Free Ground Shipping on orders over $69

    • $7 Flat-Rate Ground Shipping on orders under $69

Jerry's Artarama

Homepage_Jerry's Artarama.JPG

Jerry’s Artarama has been around since 1968, and let’s just say they know their stuff. This art supplier is still family owned and operated and not only sells supplies, they also manufacture and distribute, passing along some factory direct savings to their customers.

The site has constant promotions and sales, as well as an active blog and growing artist community. Definitely consider checking them out the next time you’re looking for some great deals. They even have a wide range of order and payment options, and FREE standard shipping on all orders $35 or more.

Note that their online store naturally carries a MUCH larger selection of materials and supplies compared to retail locations, as is the case with most stores.

Also, there is NO PRICE MATCHING between the online & retail locations (as compared to Blick’s price match rebate), so if you see a price online and plan to shop in a retail location, make sure to call ahead first to check the current price!

All things considered, this list just wouldn’t be complete without a heavyweight like Jerry’s on it.

Utrecht Art Supplies

Utrecht Art Supplies was started by two Brooklyn brothers in New York back in 1949. Over time, the Utrecht Professional Acrylic Gesso they developed to prime canvasses is still considered to be #1 by many artists to this day.

Utrecht quickly expanded to supply a full range of art materials at “direct-from-manufacturer” prices until they were eventually acquired by Blick Art Materials in 2013 (also mentioned on our list).

Because of this, you’ll find similar offerings between the two in terms of products, prices, shipping and return policy. Utrecht even carries the Blick private label art products as well, giving you another great way to access them if your’re close to an Utrecht store!

Key Features

  • Refund Policy: 365 days

  • Payment Methods: Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover Card, Paypal, and Utrecht Gift Cards.

  • Shipping: Regularly offers many free shipping promotions. Rates & more details can be found here.

Cheap Joe's Art Stuff

Homepage_Cheap Joes Art Stuff.JPG

According to their website, Cheap Joe’s started back in 1987 in North Carolina. This small, family owned art supply company remains committed to offering the “BEST value” in the U.S. when it comes to supplying art materials. They pass along and savings direct to the customers (who they feel are part of the family), and even have a GENEROUS 365 day return policy, rivaling larger suppliers like BLICK (also featured on this list).

Personally, we haven’t shopped here yet, but they come highly recommended by many of our readers so we’ve included them on this list. We will be placing an online order on our next restock and will be sure to update you on how it all went down in a later post.

So if you’re local in NC area, be sure to check out one of their 3 locations and give us some feedback in the comments!

The coupons are what really set’s this store apart from the rest, they regularly feature insane coupons like “40% off any one regular priced item” and “20% off the entire order“. You can even download their app to sign up, and have your discounts readily available in store on your smartphone.

Let’s face it, the words “Art” and “Supplies” aren’t exactly synonymous with the word “eBay” and this gigantic online marketplace and auction site may sometimes even be overlooked by those looking for great bargains on art materials. We’re here to tell you that not only is eBay an awesome place to find deeply discounted art supplies.

It also is a great place to find rare and elusive supplies that may not be carried at some of the other retailers on this list. If you deem yourself to be the adventurous or experimental type, why not check out the “Unbranded” section. You’re bound to find some really intriguing low-cost alternatives when you’re budget is looking a bit tight.

If you’ve never shopped on eBay before there’s basically two main ways sellers list their items. You can either “bid” on items (auction style), but most listings also have a “Buy it Now” price to purchase like normal. Since eBay is such a large marketplace, you’ll definitely find top brands like Winsor & Newton, Faber-Castell and Prismacolor.

Key Features

  • Refund Policy, Payment Methods, Locations, Shipping: Varies depending on the seller.

    • Read all descriptions before you buy!
